Title: Youth Services Assistant
Location: Newbury Town Library (Newbury, MA)
Start date: February 1, 2024
End date: April 30, 2024
Schedule: Tuesday 9am-1pm, Thursday 9am-1pm, Friday 12pm-5pm
Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour
CORI: Required
Summary: To provide direct services to the public as the highest priority, and to perform support services, especially in programming.
Duties and Responsibilities: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Assist Youth Services Librarian in planning story hours and other programs and conduct story hours under the direction of the Children’s Librarian.
2. Assist the Youth Services Librarian with programs by preparing craft and other materials, operating audio-visual equipment, and related tasks.
3. Perform all functions of NTL’s automated circulation system.
4. Assist patrons.
5. Shelve books and other materials and read shelves as necessary.
6. Provide coverage of the main Circulation desk if needed.
7. Assist in opening and closing procedures.
8. Other duties as required or assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:
1. Strong commitment to excellent customer service and a desire to meet and serve the library’s user community.
2. Knowledge of library principles, practices, services, and laws and ethics.
3. Willingness to assist and support coworkers and to create and contribute ideas.
4. Ability to effectively communicate with patrons of all ages.
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow staff members.
Education and/or Certification Required:
1. High School diploma or GED Certificate required, two years or more of college is desirable.
2. Experience with common office computer applications required.
3. One year of experience in a public library preferred.
